O Canada!

First Unitarian Church of Victoria:
Connie with volunteers performing an evolutionary parable,
and teaching how the atoms in our bodies were born inside stars.

Commentary by Connie Barlow and Michael Dowd

June 2003 marked our first foray north across the border into Canada. In British Columbia, sermons, talks, and workshops were conducted at the First Unitarian Church of Victoria, the Unitarian Church of Vancouver, Comox Valley Unitarian Fellowship, and a weeklong Unitarian camp of the Eliot Institute, which took place at a retreat in Naramata BC.

In October 2003 we crossed the border again, this time on our way to Montreal. Patricia Gordon (see her Unitarian metareligious essay on this website) and Clare Hallward did a phenomenal job of organizing events (and providing home hospitality) for us while in that region. Montreal area gigs included presentations at Unitarian Church of Montreal, Unitas Spiritual Center, Thomas More Institute, Concordia University, Vanier College, John Abbott College, and the Unitarian Universalist Church of North Hatley.

From Montreal, we headed east to Fredericton, New Brunswick, where John Coates organized events for us at the university where he teaches, St. Thomas University, and at the University of New Brunswick, St. Paul's United Church, and St. Dunstan's Catholic Church. John and his family also hosted us in their home for the duration of our Fredericton stay.

We concluded our Canadian programs with a Sunday sermon and kid's religious education program at the home church of Great Story aficionado Roger Davies: Universalist Unitarian Church of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Roger's artwork is the image that graces the homepage of our Great Story website.
